KL_communitynews1_womenbehindthemachines
Women do the needle work and men handle the machines: this sounds like a scenario from the last century. The reality is that in many knitwear factories this traditional gender division is still in place. At KNITWEAR LAB we turned this around. Meet our incredible women behind the machines!

Did you know that only 6 years ago, KNITWEAR LAB was just an old industrial knitting machine in a dusty garage in the outskirts of Almere? Let us introduce you to the story of our founders Thijs Verhaar and Cherish Brouwer.

KNITWEAR LAB is the brainchild of knitwear aficionado Thijs Verhaar. Thijs lived a rock & roll lifestyle, while he travelled the world working for the largest knitwear factories. For example, he knitted black stockings in picturesque Staphorst, the capital of the Dutch Bible Belt. But he also worked in China and Istanbul. After 35 turbulent years in knitwear production, he felt the desire to knit something for himself. In 2014, Thijs installed an old industrial knitwear machine in his garage in Almere. By now Thijs became quite a knitwear veteran: he still worked with the same software he pioneered with 35 years ago. So, he started to look for fresh blood. And that was when Cherish Brouwer crossed his path.

Cherish Brouwer - a devoted material specialist with a refined eye for design - graduated from ArtEZ and gained work experience at Alexander Wang in New York, among others. The Big Apple stole her heart, and she couldn’t wait to leave everything behind and kickstart her design career in … Thijs’ garage in Almere. The prehistoric knitting machine and code-it-yourself programming software wasn’t exactly in line with her expectations of her first job in the glamorous design industry. However, hard work always pays off! Thijs and Cherish got their first international client and went on a business trip to... Romania. On a deserted industrial area 5 hours from the capital, they found themselves trapped in their car circled by hungry dogs who were very excited to devour two tasty Dutch knitters.

Soon more big international clients followed, and the duo visited design cities all over the world. Cherish finally got the opportunity to return to New York to represent the LAB at a prominent design fair together with Thijs. KNITWEAR LAB grew out to be a flourishing company operating at the forefront of innovation, with five ambitious programmers, and the latest Stoll ADF machines and programming software. The LAB moved from the garage of Thijs to a larger office with plenty of space for their industrial machine park and growing team, but still located in Almere: they started to feel at home in the “fashion capital” of the middle province of the Netherlands.
